Xcelrate UDI Leverages UDI Scanning To Improve Patient Safety
Xcelrate UDI harnesses the power of the unique device identifier (UDI) and barcode scanning technology to significantly reduce patient risk with implantable devices at the point of care.
Seattle, May 27, 2020 – Xcelrate UDI, a healthcare technology and consulting company that addresses the challenges managing medical devices from ordering through patient use, introduces its new unique device identifier (UDI) scanning application, Xcelrate UDI. This desktop application enables healthcare providers and manufacturers to realize the benefits associated with UDI adoption and medical device traceability.
Xcelrate UDI sits on top of electronic health records (EHRs), requiring no system integrations or interfacing. The application pairs with medical grade barcode scanners to read both 1D and 2D barcodes for all UDI formats (GS1, HIBCC, ICCBBA), capture the medical device data, and manage the effective application of medical devices from receipt to use.
THE UDI SYSTEM
UDI is a global system intended to provide a single, globally harmonized, positive identification of medical devices through distribution and use. This system requires all medical device labels to bear a globally unique device identifier to be conveyed by using scannable and human readable formats. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), International Medical Device Regulator Forum (IMDRF), Joint Commission and European Commission have adopted UDI standards as a means to increase patient safety and help optimize patient care globally.
MEDICAL DEVICE MANAGEMENT
Xcelrate UDI solves common supply chain challenges, such as effectively tracking medical supplies from ordering through use and ensuring only authorized medical devices are being used at the point of care. Through UDI barcode scanning, Xcelrate UDI digitizes on-hand inventory upon receipt, significantly reduces the use of non-sterile worksheets, expedites the handling of expired or recalled items, eliminates the use of unauthorized or counterfeit items, and improves the quality of regulatory compliance.
POINT OF CARE SAFETY
Unfortunately, items that should not be implanted (such as expired, recalled, counterfeit, adverse event, and unauthorized items) find their way into operating and procedure rooms. Xcelrate UDI scans all barcodes at the point of care to quickly identify, log and prevent these items from being implanted by presenting visual and audible warnings and a physical vibration within the handheld scanner. This enables a safe item to be selected for implant.
HEALTH RECORD DOCUMENTATION
As part of their data standardization efforts, the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) established that UDI data must be captured and made accessible to patients as part of their healthcare data.
Unfortunately, implant documentation is often performed manually, can take several minutes per implant, does not always include all data elements required by the ONC, and often includes data entry errors or inaccuracies. By scanning the UDI barcode, Xcelrate UDI captures the UDI data directly from the FDA’s GUDID database and parses the information directly into the appropriate fields within the health record.
In less than 8 seconds, the medical device data is scanned, the UDI data is captured, the device is checked for implant safety, and health record is fully documented with accuracy.
REAL-TIME BENEFITS
For hospitals and surgery centers, Xcelrate UDI:
- Takes the guesswork out of identifying which barcode to scan or read
- Eliminates manual inventory management and product validation
- Reduces patient risk at the point of care by preventing recalls and unauthorized items
- Ensures the complete, accurate, and efficient documentation of the patient’s records
- Reduces costly penalties and administrative work to fix patient records and billing errors
Xcelrate UDI closes the gaps within the UDI system regarding compliance, prevention and awareness, and is the only industry’s only barcode scanning suite CEHRT certified under the ONC for Health Information Technology and fully complies with all requirements.
With more than 450 operating and procedure rooms in the United States using Xcelrate UDI to realize these benefits, the company is continuing to work directly with device manufacturers and international UDI communities to support the global expansion of UDI adoption and use.
